DESIGNING A GRADUATE SHORT FILM - 'RED TIDINGS'

In my second year of university, we were given the opportunity to collaborate with third year Film students on their final short films, working as part of the Art Department. I worked on Red Tidings, a film about a young woman disguised as a pirate and her journey towards freedom. I was involved in developing the visual world of the film, using research into the period, locations and characters to help create an authentic and atmospheric pirate environment. I worked to translate the script into a visual world that felt authentic to the period while supporting the story and its themes and ensuring the designs were practical for filming. Working collaboratively with the Film students gave me a better understanding of where the Art Department fits in, the overall process of creating a short film, from pre-production to post-production and the challenges that arise throughout each segment. Below are a few images of the process and behind the scenes of designing the film, as well as some stills from the film itself.
